Peter ‘Doc’ Larkins is a specialist sports physician actively involved in all areas of sport and fitness as a clinician, media commentator, educator and participant. He established one of the first solo private sports physician practices in Australia in 1979.
His practice deals with all areas of health, fitness and exercise including sports injuries and health promotion for the active individual regardless of age. He is a founding member of the Epworth Sports and Exercise Medicine Group.
After graduating with degrees in medicine and medical science (exercise physiology), he undertook post graduate studies in sports and exercise medicine in Canada, USA, England and East Africa before returning to Australia to continue his private practice.
Peter is a former National President of Sports Medicine Australia (SMA), the peak advisory body on health and fitness in Australia, and a past national Vice President of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians (ACSP). Over the past 25 years he has served on numerous administrative committees and working parties for Government and professional health, fitness and medical organisations.
He has worked as team doctor for a wide range of sports including the Australian track and field, cricket, triathlon and lacrosse teams at World Cup, World Championship and Commonwealth Games events. Peter has been a team doctor for both the Geelong and Adelaide AFL football clubs and was a senior Team Leader for the provision of medical services at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
His extensive media involvement includes appearances on television, radio and in newsprint on issues related to sport and health. He has been a panelist on The Footy Show and has covered over 1000 AFL games for Triple M radio before being recruited to 3AW and Channel 7 last year.
Peter’s interest in sport and fitness began with his own sports career involving athletics, football and cricket. He has represented Australia as a competitor in middle distance running at Olympic, Commonwealth and World Cup competitions including being captain of the Australian team in 1983.
